The Rules and other Silly Survival Tricks

Carson is 7 weeks old today. I can hardly believe it has been that long and I can also hardly believe it hasn't been much, much longer. My friend Alia had her baby, Rachel Sophia this week and when visiting her, it didn't seem possible that Carson was ever a tiny little newborn. They really do grow so fast and I am enjoying every day, even including challenges and obstacles. I don't regret it a moment.
Sappy moment over. We hit the 6 week growth spurt with a vengeance last week. The 3 week growth spurt took me by surprise and caused my first (and only) phone call for Andy to come home from work. So Oh Boy, was I ready for this one, I knew it was coming, I braced myself and sure enough it came. It came slowly, like a smell in the fridge that you can't find and then suddenly, suddenly you KNOW just what that smell is.
On the peak of this growth spurt Carson was eating every 40 minutes for an entire day. However, I saw it coming, got all my errands done in advance and sat down with my new "breast" friend....HBO. Check out the Will Farrell act of G.W. if you have a chance, pretty funny.
Fortunately, for me, the hourly feedings were extended to 2.5 - 3 hour intervals at night for about 3 nights. Andy was able to take a feeding right before bedtime and a midnight feeding so I could go to bed early and miss 2 feedings. This let me get at least 4-5 hours straight during those nights. Thank goodness for the planning skills of an engineer. So now we are back on track, logging 4-5 hours straight a night (mostly 4) and a sigh of relief is breathed until we hit the 3 month growth spurt in another 6 weeks.
After 3 weekends of fatigue induced bickering, Andy and I decided to create our weekend survival guide, or THE RULES as we have started to call them. THE RULES are a subject to change and can be added to or deleted from at any given time, with prior consent, of course! Since neither of us gets any time alone during the week, we each give each other 1-2 hours on Saturday and 1-2 hours on Sunday of a "spouse and baby free environment." Now who does that sound like? Not me, I would say. For Andy, that means alone time at home to relax and unwind after a week of work. For me, that means time to leave the house I have been in most of the week. In addtion, I get 2 chores out of him on Saturday and on Sunday that I wasn't able to finish during the week. Hellooo CLEAN CAR! A shout out to you, Hung Cothes Rack! Buenas Dias, Functioning Bouncy Chair. Who knew you could fix a motor on a very effective child babysitting device? I think I'm likin' THE RULES. How long is TOO long to leave your baby in a bouncy chair, anyway????
